Ahh, September. The blissful pause between the hubbub of activity that summer brings and the hullabaloo of fall foliage season. When you visit the Berkshires in September, you’ll find all the best of the region without all the crowds of people. The transition from summer to fall brings with it the warmth of summer and the anticipation of the glory to come when Mother nature begins to paint the landscape with the brilliant colors of autumn. It’s truly one of the best times to visit our elegant country retreat in Lee, MA.
“By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer.”
― Helen Hunt Jackson
Get Outside in the Fresh Air and Sunshine
It’s still not time to put away your kayaks or canoes, your mountain bikes, or hiking boots. September’s warm days and cool nights still offer plenty of time to get outside and recreate. Book one of our very popular outdoor experience packages, or strike out on your own for an adventure in the air, on the water, or on horseback.
Dine Leisurely
Though reservations are still recommended, it’s easier to secure your favorite dining time after Labor Day. Restaurants remain open throughout the busy foliage and holiday seasons, but the sweet spot for a leisurely dining experience is undoubtedly September. Once our summer visitors have gone and before the frenzy of leaf-peepers arrives, we enjoy several weeks of serenity. Our local pubs and restaurants welcome the lull between the end of our summer season and the whirlwind of foliage. And best of all, many of our favorite spots to recommend are right here in Lee, MA, and our neighboring towns of Lenox, Stockbridge, and Great Barrington.
Explore Museums, Historic Estates, and Gardens
Reserve an afternoon to visit one of the many museums, historic estates, and gardens that are found throughout the Berkshires. A pleasant stroll inside or out makes for a splendid way to enjoy an unseasonably warm summer-like day. Take time to sit awhile and observe the comings and goings of squirrels and chipmunks in the gardens. Relish in the leisurely pace of a tour through The Mount or the Norman Rockwell Museum when the tide of tourists ebbs.
Tune in to Live Entertainment
Although the Boston Pops packs up and heads back to the city after its summer residence at Tanglewood, live entertainment remains alive and well in the Berkshires well into fall and winter. Take in an evening concert at Naumkeag, a theatrical performance at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, or bone up on your Shakespeare with Shakespeare and Company.
Get a Jump on Holiday Shopping
The holidays may not be on your radar just yet, but truth be told, it’s never too early to get a jump on things. Believe it or not, the Berkshires is a shopping mecca. From premium outlets to quaint shops and boutiques, you’ll find treasures galore to bring home and wrap up for friends and family. Perhaps you’ll even find the perfect accessory for your own home or wardrobe. Shopping for the holidays in the quiet atmosphere of the Berkshires in September makes for a fun and unhurried way to beat the holiday rush.
